Job Description

What We Do

Integer Technologies is an applied research and product development company founded by scientists and engineers with a passion for technology and national security. We perform R&D on next-generation systems and technologies for the Department of Defense and other U.S. Government agencies. We are hardware and software developers with experience turning research into impactful products for military and commercial applications. Our core portfolio of research includes projects in power & energy systems, unmanned systems (with an emphasis on maritime systems), digital engineering, and advanced manufacturing. We are a startup founded for the purpose of putting research into action. Our mission is to create a safer world by translating scientific discoveries into reliable products that address urgent national security needs… at the speed of relevance.

Our unmanned systems portfolio includes work on critical enabling technologies for more reliable, more intelligent, and longer-duration unmanned systems. We are actively developing a new perception system that automatically detects objects on and just below the surface of the water, day or night, and in most weather conditions, by fusing sensor data from multi-spectral cameras and radar using reliable and validated machine learning algorithms. This perception system will be a key enabler for autonomous ships to navigate safely without human intervention. Our power & energy systems portfolio includes work supporting the DoD’s the electrification of platforms beginning with Navy ships. Applications include hybrid and electric propulsion systems, autonomous controls, and integration with mission systems to achieve ultra-fast power system response. Our advanced manufacturing portfolio includes works to improve the throughput and quality of high-temperature composite parts used in advanced military aerospace systems.

Company Perks

  • Startup culture with the stability of a large company. Integer’s business plan has years of time phased contracted work, alleviating the would-be risk from a traditional small company.

  • Direct access to company leadership, prioritization of people over process, and a stellar team with a shared desire for personal and professional growth.

  • Friendly atmosphere where people enjoy not only their work and what they're creating but enjoy helping each other as well.

  • Bottomless Coffee!

About the Role

The Digital Twin Engineer role requires passion and drive to create and maintain virtual representations of multi-domain/multiphysics physical systems to be used for applications such as health monitoring, diagnostics, prognostics, and advanced controls. The Digital Twin Engineer should understand how to identify important features and dynamic phenomena of a physical system, create appropriate computer models of these systems which incorporate the relevant features, dynamics, and application-critical behaviors, write software to connect the models to the physical systems through live streaming data feedback channels, and update the models in both real time and faster than real time.  A successful candidate will understand how to balance the trade-offs between model fidelity, streaming data sampling rate, digital twin execution time step, domain representation integrity, and computational resources, to develop a family of component and system level digital twins appropriate to a variety of applications. The Digital Twin Engineer will work both individually and in concert with other engineers, subject-matter experts, and program management to devise suitable digital twin strategies (including physics-based and behavioral approaches) and subsequently to produce robust, reliable digital twins for several customers across government and industry.

Primary Responsibilities

  • The successful candidate must demonstrate an attitude for growth, continuously expanding their knowledge and skill to remain on the cutting-edge.

  • The candidate must be organized and detail oriented.

  • This role may involve interacting with customers whose needs are constantly evolving and are sometimes difficult to articulate; thus, strong communication skills will also be beneficial.

  • Integer is a science and technology research and development organization. As such, much of our work entails developing solutions for complex problems that presently have no known solutions.

  • To achieve internal and customer project goals all candidates must be able to perform research, understand new concepts from other engineering disciplines on advanced and complex topics, and document findings in a way that is easy for non-experts to understand.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar technical discipline.

  • Demonstrated mastery of at least one computer modeling & simulation environment (MATLAB/Simulink preferred).

  • Experience writing software and manipulating data streams from the sensors of physical systems to update physics-based or data-driven models to reflect the status of the physical system.

  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or more of the following technical areas:

  • Electrical Power and Energy Systems including electric machinery, gas turbines, diesel generators, propulsion systems, batteries, power electronics, switchgear, etc.

  • Cooling and Ventilation Systems including heat exchangers, pumps, valves, piping, expansion tanks, fans, etc.

  • Fuel Delivery Systems for marine applications

  • Machinery Control Systems including sensing, communication, and system level controls for electric plants, machinery, and electromechanical systems

  • U.S. citizenship. Must have the ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance that requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

  • 6+ years professional experience developing software in the field of autonomy (4+ with master’s degree).

  • Prior experience using data from various perception sensor types (cameras, lidar, radar, sonar etc…) to enhance a robotic platform's perception of its surrounding environmental and potential navigational hazards.

  • Strong background in software development using modern C++, and Python.

  • Strong background in mathematics, and understanding of robotic algorithms such as, linear algebra, trigonometry, Bayesian statistics, and Kalman Filters.

  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to travel occasionally, estimated at less than 15% of the time.

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • A graduate degree (Masters/PhD) in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar technical discipline. A record of relevant industry experience, technical leadership, publications, or other recognitions for expertise may substitute for an advanced degree.

  • Deep technical knowledge of simulation solver technologies and numerical integration methods.  Awareness of industry best practices for robust numerical convergence.

  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Java).

  • Experience using software version control and working in an agile coding environment with peer collaboration and code reviews.

  • Experience with ship power systems, microgrid power systems, and/or integrated power system concepts.

  • Experience writing software to automate and schedule batches of simulations.

  • Experience with objective functions and optimal control of dynamic systems.

  • Experience with machine learning applied to data driven modeling.

  • Real time simulation of power system components using RTDS, Typhoon, Speedgoat, etc.

  • Knowledge of or experience with high heat manufacturing processes
