Job Description

Director of Navy Power & Energy Systems

What We Do

Integer Technologies is an applied research and product development company founded by scientists and engineers with a passion for technology and national security. We perform R&D on next-generation systems and technologies for the Department of Defense and other U.S. Government agencies. We are hardware and software developers with experience turning research into impactful products for military and commercial applications. Our core portfolio of research includes projects in power & energy systems, unmanned systems (with an emphasis on maritime systems), digital engineering, and advanced manufacturing.

Our power & energy systems portfolio includes work supporting the DoD’s the electrification of platforms beginning with Navy ships. Applications include advanced controls for integrated power (and energy) systems, hybrid and electric propulsion system design, integration of large-scale energy storage devices (> 1MW-hr), reliable power and propulsion for unmanned vessels, and integration between mission systems and power systems to achieve ultra-fast power system response.

We are a startup founded for the purpose of putting research into action. Our mission is to create a safer world by translating scientific discoveries into reliable products that address urgent national security needs… at the speed of relevance.

About the Role

The Director of Navy Power & Energy Systems manages a team of scientists and engineers to successfully execute multiple R&D projects related to Navy power & energy systems, including Integer Technologies’ flagship R&D project developing advanced controls and autonomy for Navy ship integrated power and energy systems (IPES). The ideal candidate will have a background in a customer-facing role for projects involving machinery control systems or engineering control systems for Navy vessels, energy storage systems, electric propulsion systems, directed energy systems, or similar Navy effort with an emphasis on shipboard electrical power. The ideal candidate must be able to leverage a deep mission understanding of DoD Navy customers’ needs and objectives concentrated in the areas of ship electrical power & energy systems, machinery/engineering control systems, systems engineering & integration, and software development.

This role is responsible for transitioning Integer’s R&D into prototypes and products to build sales to government acquisition offices and large defense contractors. As such, the role requires building and maintaining connections to DoD stakeholders in power & energy systems, market analysis, working with executive leadership to define a vision for new products derived from our R&D, translating that vision into technical requirements for our engineering team to develop, managing product development, test and demonstration, proposal development, and managing customer relationships.

Required Qualifications

  • Prior leadership role for projects related to Navy ship electrical power systems, specifically for ships with integrated power systems or integrated power and energy systems (IPS / IPES) such as the DDG 1000 Zumwalt, and a deep understanding of machinery control systems or engineering control systems (MCS / ECS) for Navy surface vessels.

  • Prior working relationship with DoD stakeholders in ship electrical power systems. Examples include, but are not limited to, points of contact at: Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA 05 and PEO Ships); Navy Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Philadelphia and Carderock Divisions; Electric Ships Office (formerly PMS320).

  • Experience with the full lifecycle of project management responsibilities, including: proposal development, budget estimating, setting and tracking project performance metrics, technical reporting, and technical team management.

  • Experience with the DoD’s approach to schedule and risk management.

  • Experience managing projects with budgets of $10M+

  • Experience managing teams of ten (10), or more, engineers and scientists.

  • Experience taking a project to a minimum of Technology Readiness Level of 7 (System prototype demonstration in an operational environment.)

  • Must have the ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance that requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior customer-facing leadership role for a Navy prototype demonstration or acquisition program related to electric ships. Demonstrated ability to interface with research sponsors and stakeholders in the Navy requirements and acquisition communities.

  • Deep knowledge of the Naval Power & Energy Systems Technology Development Roadmap (NPES TDR) and the operational requirements driving the current and future roadmap.

  • Experience managing software development according to continuous integration, continuous development (CI/CD) and ‘DevSecOps’ best practices.
