Job Description
What We Do
Integer Technologies is an applied research and product development company founded by scientists and engineers with a passion for technology and national security. We perform R&D on next-generation systems and technologies for the Department of Defense and other U.S. Government agencies. We are hardware and software developers with experience turning research into impactful products for military and commercial applications. Our core portfolio of research includes projects in power & energy systems, unmanned systems (with an emphasis on maritime systems), digital engineering, and advanced manufacturing. We are a startup founded for the purpose of putting research into action. Our mission is to create a safer world by translating scientific discoveries into reliable products that address urgent national security needs… at the speed of relevance.

Our autonomous systems portfolio includes work on critical enabling technologies for more reliable, more intelligent, and longer-duration unmanned and autonomous systems. We are actively developing a new perception system that automatically detects objects on and just below the surface of the water, day or night, and in most weather conditions, by fusing sensor data from multi-spectral cameras and radar using reliable and validated machine learning algorithms. This perception system will be a key enabler for autonomous ships to navigate safely without human intervention. Our power & energy systems portfolio includes work supporting the DoD’s the electrification of platforms beginning with Navy ships. Applications include hybrid and electric propulsion systems, autonomous controls, and integration with mission systems to achieve ultra-fast power system response.

About the Role
The Lead Autonomous Vehicles Engineer requires passion and drive to serve as Principal Investigator (PI) on large, multi-year research projects working towards enabling distributed operations of multi-domain (surface, subsea, and air) unmanned and autonomous vehicles in the maritime environment. This role requires an understanding of digital engineering, analysis, and/or modeling and simulation tools and how to apply those tools to mission-level assessments of distributed unmanned operations. The Lead Autonomous Vehicles Engineer also requires the ability to lead and mentor other engineers, interface with Integer’s academic research partners, and serve as a liaison to government customers. The role requires an understanding of the Navy’s mission, capability gaps, and the ability to pursue new distributed unmanned systems research projects.

Many of our projects focus on using sensor-informed models running onboard unmanned platforms (e.g., unmanned surface vessels and unmanned underwater vessels) to make real-time assessments of mission goals and provide the operators if unmanned systems with decision aids to maximize mission outcomes. Executing this approach for distributed maritime operations, which involve multiple unmanned or autonomous systems operating together to achieve a given mission, requires a systems-of-systems modelling and simulation approach. Therefore, we are particularly interested candidates who have experience in extracting critical data from dense sources (e.g., modeling and simulation tools, sensors, and/or machinery control systems) and translating that into actionable, mission-level information for autonomous decision making onboard autonomous systems.

Integer’s operating model is to provide a vehicle to turn academic science and technology research topics into tangible technology for the Department of Defense. As such, much of our work entails developing solutions for complex problems that presently have no known solutions. To achieve both internal and customer project goals all candidates must be able to perform research, understand new concepts from other engineering disciplines on advanced and complex topics, and document findings in a way that is easy for non-experts to understand.
Primary Responsibilities
-
Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) for distributed systems research programs.
-
Use prior experience and hands-on systems engineering skills to lead a team of engineers developing new tools to monitor and assess distributed maritime operations in real-time.
-
Work with data from multiple sources in a battlefield management framework for unmanned and autonomous platforms to understand impact on high-level mission outcomes.
-
Work with partners to conduct research leveraging models and simulations of maritime autonomous vehicles across multiple operational domains (surface, subsea, and aerial).
-
Interface with university partners to translate academic research into Navy relevant tools that meet specific mission requirements.
-
Provide domain knowledge for distributed systems and systems engineering including technical analysis, software development, and product development.
-
Mentor researchers and engineers on toolsets, best practices, and state-of-the-art methods in distributed systems and systems engineering.
-
Manage, track, and review deliverables to federal customers. Ensure program deadlines are met and manage priorities for multiple programs.
-
Collaborate with federal sponsors to understand their missions, technology gaps, and success criteria.
-
Translate findings into, and contribute to, white papers and proposals for new research projects.
Core Requirements
-
Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD Top Secret Clearance.
-
Masters degree in relevant field (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or other related field) and 5+ years of experience relevant to the primary responsibilities outlined above or 10+ years of experience relevant to the primary responsibilities outlined above.
-
Knowledge of topics related to unmanned and autonomous vehicles such as modeling and simulation, intelligent control and decision making, battlefield management, multi-agent collaboration, and/or autonomous and unmanned systems.
-
Understanding of the operation of, challenges for, and mission-level autonomy design for autonomous vehicles.
-
Experience with computational science software development in general purpose programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB).
-
Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and technical leadership. Must have the ability to lead cross domain teams in new research areas.
-
Understanding of the Navy and Department of Defense’s mission, problem set, and strategy for the integration of autonomous systems.
-
Ability to travel up to approximately 15% of time. This travel includes, but is not limited to, meetings with government customers, technical conferences, industry days, and off-site test events.
Additional Desired Qualifications
-
Ph.D. in relevant field (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or other related field).
-
Experience with unmanned and autonomous systems research involving maritime autonomous systems such as uncrewed surface vessels and uncrewed underwater vessels.
-
Experience with the application of artificial intelligence to intelligent control and decision making of autonomous systems.
-
Experience with digital prototyping and simulation of collaborative autonomous systems in digital environments.
-
Experience with modeling and simulation of communication systems in the maritime environment (e.g., SATCOM, VHF, acoustic modems).
