Job Description

What We Do

Integer Technologies is an applied research and product development company founded by scientists and engineers with a passion for technology and national security. We perform R&D on next-generation systems and technologies for the Department of Defense and other U.S. Government agencies. We are hardware and software developers with experience turning research into impactful products for military and commercial applications. Our core portfolio of research includes projects in power & energy systems, unmanned systems (with an emphasis on maritime systems), digital engineering, and advanced manufacturing. We are a startup founded for the purpose of putting research into action. Our mission is to create a safer world by translating scientific discoveries into reliable products that address urgent national security needs… at the speed of relevance.

Our unmanned systems portfolio includes work on critical enabling technologies for more reliable, more intelligent, and longer-duration unmanned systems. We are actively developing a new perception system that automatically detects objects on and just below the surface of the water, day or night, and in most weather conditions, by fusing sensor data from multi-spectral cameras and radar using reliable and validated machine learning algorithms. This perception system will be a key enabler for autonomous ships to navigate safely without human intervention. Our power & energy systems portfolio includes work supporting the DoD’s the electrification of platforms beginning with Navy ships. Applications include hybrid and electric propulsion systems, autonomous controls, and integration with mission systems to achieve ultra-fast power system response. Our advanced manufacturing portfolio includes works to improve the throughput and quality of high-temperature composite parts used in advanced military aerospace systems.

We are launching a new portfolio of applied research projects aimed at increasing the cyber resilience of cyber-physical systems fielded by the Navy. This includes uncrewed and autonomous systems, next-generation warships, and distributed forward operating bases. These projects will work to ensure Navy systems are able to operate in contested regions across the globe and that the Navy can respond effectively to the pace of change in the cyber battlespace.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Integer fully covers medical, prescription, vision, and dental insurance costs for the employee and dependents. Meaning Integer standard plan pays 100% of health insurance premiums for your entire family from a well-known national insurer, saving its employee’s thousands of dollars annually.

  •  Relocation assistance available.

  • Base salaries which exceed local & national industry averages.

  • Year-end performance-based bonuses.

  • 401(k) with company matching that vest immediately; no funny business.

  • Paid Vacation

  • Paid Sick Leave

  • Paid Holidays

Company Perks

  • Startup culture with the stability of a large company. Integer’s business plan has years of time phased contracted work, alleviating the would-be risk from a traditional small company.

  • Direct access to company leadership, prioritization of people over process, and a stellar team with a shared desire for personal and professional growth.

  • Friendly atmosphere where people enjoy not only their work and what they're creating but enjoy helping each other as well.

  • Bottomless Coffee!

About the Role

The Lead Cyber Physical Systems Researcher requires passion and drive to serve as Principal Investigator (PI) on large, multi-year research projects working on increasing the cyber resilience of autonomous systems and the strength of the Navy’s capabilities in the cyber battlespace. This role requires the ability to lead and mentor other engineers and interface with Integer’s research partners. It also requires an understanding of the research landscape for cyber physical systems, the ability to identify gaps in Department of Defense capabilities, and to pursue new cyber physical systems research projects.

Many of our projects involve software and digital engineering tools deployed on physical systems with an emphasis on the interface between the digital and physical. Therefore, we are particularly interested in candidates with a diverse set of experiences with systems at multiple levels of development, including early-stage design and field deployments. An ideal candidate will have experience with operational cyber research for advanced autonomous systems, industrial control systems, and/or maritime vessels.

Integer’s operating model is to provide a vehicle to turn academic science and technology research topics into tangible technology for the Department of Defense. As such, much of our work entails developing solutions for complex problems that presently have no known solutions. To achieve both internal and customer project goals all candidates must be able to perform research, understand new concepts from other engineering disciplines on advanced and complex topics, and document findings in a way that is easy for non-experts to understand.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Serve as Principal Investigator (PI) for cyber research programs, with an emphasis on offensive cyber security methods for cyber physical systems on maritime platforms.

  • Use prior experience and hands-on development skills to construct new vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, red-teaming, and reverse engineering tools for maritime autonomous systems.

  • Deploy new software on cyber-physical prototypes including industrials control systems, machinery control systems, programmable logic controllers, and/or sensor equipment (e.g., EO/IR cameras, RADAR, GPS).

  • Provide domain knowledge for cyber-physical system including technical analysis, experimental development, engineering, and product development.

  • Mentor researchers and engineers on toolsets, best practices, and state-of-the-art methods in cyber research.

  • Manage, track, and review deliverables to federal customers. Ensure program deadlines are met and manage priorities for multiple programs.

  • Collaborate with federal sponsors to understand their missions, technology gaps, and success criteria.

  • Translate findings into, and contribute to, white papers and proposals for new research projects.

Qualification Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD Top Secret Clearance.

  • Masters degree in relevant field (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or other related field) and 5+ years of experience relevant to the primary responsibilities outlined above.

  • Conducted research on topics related to cyber-physical systems such as Internet of Things (IoT), Intelligent Sensors, Autonomous Systems, Industrial Control Systems, or other related topics.

  • Experience with developing software with general purpose languages in a production environment.

  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills and technical leadership. Must have the ability to lead cross domain teams in new research areas.

  • Must be comfortable with modern software engineering practices such as version control.

  • Ability to travel up to approximately 15% of time.

Additional Desired Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in relevant field (e.g., computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or other related field).

  • Experience using Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) models to develop advanced cyber security tools.

  • Experience with vulnerability assessment, exploit development, and/or reverse engineering for cyber-physical systems with AI/ML-based controllers or automation software (e.g., experience conducting research targeting AI/ML models within an autonomous systems’ decision loop).

  • Experience with cyber research involving maritime or Navy platforms (e.g., automation and sensor systems onboard maritime vessels and/or uncrewed maritime systems).

  • Experience reverse engineering and developing secure software for embedded systems.
