Job Description

Senior Cyber Physical Security Engineer

What
We Do

Integer Technologies is an applied research and product development company founded by scientists and engineers with a passion for technology and national security. We perform R&D on next-generation systems and technologies for the Department of Defense and other U.S. Government agencies. We are hardware and software developers with experience turning research into impactful products for military and commercial applications. Our core portfolio of research includes projects in controls and automation of maritime vessels, uncrewed systems, maritime perception, digital engineering, and advanced manufacturing. We are a startup founded for the purpose of putting research into action. Our mission is to create a safer world by translating scientific discoveries into reliable products that address urgent national security needs… at the speed of relevance.

Our unmanned systems portfolio includes work on critical enabling technologies for more reliable, more intelligent, and longer-duration unmanned systems. We are actively developing a new perception system that automatically detects objects on and just below the surface of the water by fusing sensor data from multi-spectral cameras and radar using reliable and validated machine learning algorithms. Our power & energy systems portfolio includes work supporting the DoD’s the electrification of platforms beginning with Navy ships. Applications include hybrid and electric propulsion systems, autonomous controls, and integration with mission systems to achieve ultra-fast power system response.

We are launching a new portfolio of applied research projects aimed at increasing the cyber resilience of cyber-physical systems fielded by the Navy. This includes uncrewed and autonomous systems, next-generation warships, and distributed forward operating bases. These projects will work to ensure Navy systems are able to operate in contested regions across the globe and that the Navy can respond effectively to the pace of change in the cyber battlespace.

About the
Role

Integer seeks a Senior Cyber-Physical Security Engineer with proven expertise in the analysis, design, and development of algorithms and software integral to an integrated cyber-physical resilience stress testing platform for unmanned underwater and surface vessels (UUVs, USVs). In this vital role, the engineer will design, develop, and rigorously test systems to ensure robust security measures are embedded within for uncrewed and autonomous vehicles.

The ideal candidate will possess prior experience in crafting sophisticated security solutions that enhance the operational integrity and resilience of autonomous maritime systems. This role requires the ability to lead and mentor other engineers and interface with Integer’s research partners for large, multi-year research projects working on increasing the cyber resilience of autonomous systems and the strength of the Navy’s capabilities in the cyber battlespace.

Additionally, this position requires a deep understanding of the cyber physical research landscape, coupled with the acumen to identify, and address gaps in Department of Defense capabilities, and to pursue new cyber physical systems research projects.

Our projects involve software and digital engineering tools deployed on physical systems with an emphasis on the interface between the digital and physical. Therefore, we are particularly interested in candidates with a diverse set of experiences with systems at multiple levels of development, including early-stage design and field deployments. An ideal candidate will have experience with operational cyber research for advanced autonomous systems, industrial control systems, and/or maritime vessels.

Integer’s operating model is to provide a vehicle to turn academic science and technology research topics into tangible technology for the Department of Defense. As such, much of our work entails developing solutions for complex problems that presently have no known solutions. To achieve both internal and customer project goals all candidates must be able to perform research, understand new concepts from other engineering disciplines on advanced and complex topics, and document findings in a way that is easy for non-experts to understand.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a Senior Engineer for cyber research programs, with an emphasis on offensive cyber security methods for cyber physical systems on maritime platforms.

  • Use prior experience and hands-on development skills to construct new vulnerability assessment, penetration testing, red-teaming, and reverse engineering tools for maritime autonomous systems.

  • Engineer sophisticated cybersecurity measures, including AI/ML security tools, to enhance the resilience of autonomous systems.

  • Contribute to the architecture design, development, and deployment of an attack emulation cyber-physical resilience stress test platform that simulates sophisticated cyber threats for testing and validation of security measures in cyber-physical systems.

  • Develop and implement security protocols for real-time and near real-time decision-making architectures and operator-in-the-loop configurations.

  • Integrate and prototype cyber-physical systems utilizing a variety of communication protocols such as CAN, MODBUS, and TCP/IP.

  • Provide domain knowledge for cyber-physical system including technical analysis, experimental development, engineering, and product development.

  • Mentor researchers and engineers on toolsets, best practices, and state-of-the-art methods in cyber research, fostering a culture of technical excellence.

  • Employ best practices in software development to create scalable, secure, and efficient solutions.

  • Maintain high standards of code quality and system reliability through rigorous testing and validation.

  • Contribute to monthly and quarterly progress reports, white papers, research articles, and proposals for new cyber-physical systems security business opportunities.
