Job Description

Electrical Hardware in the Loop Engineer

What We Do

Integer Technologies is an applied research and product development company founded by scientists and engineers with a passion for technology and national security. We perform R&D on next-generation systems and technologies for the Department of Defense (DoD) and other U.S. Government agencies, turning research into impactful products with military and commercial applications. Our core portfolio of research includes projects in power & energy systems, unmanned systems (with an emphasis on maritime systems), digital engineering, and advanced manufacturing.

Our power & energy systems portfolio supports the DoD’s electrification of platforms, such as Navy ships. Our research involves hybrid and electric propulsion systems, large energy storage devices, power converters, autonomy, digital twins, and integration with mission systems to achieve fast and reliable power system response.

About the Role

The Electrical Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Engineer role requires a strong background in real time simulation of electrical power systems, power converters, electric machines, and controls. They should understand the multi-domain physics behind power system components and be capable of maintaining virtual representations of the physical systems to be used for applications such as health monitoring, diagnostics, prognostics, and advanced controls. The Electrical HIL Engineer should understand how to identify important features and dynamic phenomena of a physical system across the electrical, thermal, and mechanical domains and be capable of creating appropriate computer models of these systems which incorporate the relevant features, dynamics, and application-critical behaviors.

A successful candidate will have experience with controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) in which a physical power system equipment’s controller is executing control application code in coordination with a power system plant model running in real time on a real-time simulator. A strong candidate will also be experienced in power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) testing in which real power hardware is tested at full scale power and voltage levels by interfacing with the simulator through power amplifiers.

The successful candidate must demonstrate an attitude for growth, continuously expanding their knowledge and skill to remain on the cutting-edge.  The candidate must be organized and detail oriented.  This role may involve interacting with customers whose needs are constantly evolving and are sometimes difficult to articulate; thus, strong communication skills will also be beneficial.

Integer is a science and technology research and development organization. As such, much of our work entails developing solutions for complex problems that presently have no known solutions. To achieve internal and customer project goals all candidates must be able to perform research, understand new

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar technical discipline.

  • Demonstrated mastery of at least one computer modeling & simulation environment (MATLAB/Simulink preferred).

  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Java).

  • Demonstrated understanding of HIL challenges such as coordinating various communication protocols, identifying the proper amplifier bandwidth, and understanding and minimizing latency.

  • Demonstrated mastery of at least one real time computer modeling & simulation environment such as RTDS, Opal-RT, Speedgoat, etc.

  • Experience with controller hardware-in-the-loop (CHIL) in which a physical power system equipment’s controller is executing control application code in coordination with a power system plant model running in real time on a real-time simulator.

  • Experience with power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) testing in which real power hardware is tested at full scale power and voltage levels by interfacing with the simulator through power amplifiers.

    • Experience testing power equipment such as converters, generators, motors, and/or batteries using power hardware-in-the-loop.

  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or more of the following technical areas:

    • Electrical Power and Energy Systems including electric machinery, gas turbines, diesel generators, propulsion systems, batteries, power electronics, switchgear, etc.

    • Cooling and Ventilation Systems including heat exchangers, pumps, valves, piping, expansion tanks, fans, etc.

    • Machinery Control Systems including sensing, communication, and system level controls for electric plants, machinery, and electromechanical systems.

  • Experience with ship power systems, microgrid power systems, and/or integrated power system concepts.

  • U.S. citizenship. Must have the ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance that requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A graduate degree (Masters/PhD) in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar technical discipline. A record of relevant industry experience, technical leadership, publications, or other recognitions for expertise may substitute for an advanced degree.

  • Deep technical knowledge of simulation solver technologies and numerical integration methods.  Awareness of industry best practices for robust numerical convergence.

  • Experience with power systems in military and/or marine applications.

  • Experience using software version control and working in an agile coding environment with peer collaboration and code reviews.

  • Experience writing, simulating, and deploying control software for power systems and power system components.

  • Experience writing software to automate and schedule batches of simulations.

  • Experience with objective functions and optimal control of dynamic systems.

  • Experience with machine learning applied to data driven modeling.

  • Real time simulation of power system components using RTDS, Typhoon, Speedgoat, etc.
