Job Description

Senior Electrical Power Systems Engineer

What We Do

Integer Technologies is an applied research and product development company founded by scientists and engineers with a passion for technology and national security. We perform R&D on next-generation systems and technologies for the Department of Defense and other U.S. Government agencies. We are hardware and software developers with experience turning research into impactful products for military and commercial applications. Our core portfolio of research includes projects in controls and automation for electrical and machinery systems, perception systems for uncrewed vehicles (with an emphasis on maritime vehicles), digital twins and autonomy, and advanced manufacturing. We are a startup founded for the purpose of putting research into action. Our mission is to create a safer world by translating scientific discoveries into reliable products that address urgent national security needs… at the speed of relevance.

Our perception systems portfolio includes work on critical enabling technologies for more reliable, more intelligent, and longer-duration uncrewed vehicles. We are actively developing a new perception system for ships that automatically detects objects on and just below the surface of the water, day or night, and in most weather conditions, by fusing sensor data from multi-spectral cameras and radar using reliable and validated computer vision algorithms. This perception system will be a key enabler for uncrewed ships to navigate safely without human intervention.

The Engineering Manager will lead and organize our team of scientists and engineers developing this novel system to achieve successful field testing of prototypes and continuous improvement of the commercial product. The Engineering Manager for Computer Vision Systems will also be the Principal Investigator (PI) for government-sponsored research projects in the technical areas of electro-optical sensing, sensor fusion, computer vision and robotic perception systems. As such, the Engineering Manager will have a technical background related to computer vision and/or electro-optical systems, as well as experience driving research projects from start to completion.

About the Role

The Senior Electrical Power Systems Engineer role requires a strong background in electrical power systems, power converters, and electric machines. They should understand the multi-domain physics behind power system components and be capable of maintaining virtual representations of the physical systems to be used for applications such as health monitoring, diagnostics, prognostics, and advanced controls.

The Senior Electrical Power Systems Engineer should understand how to identify important features and dynamic phenomena of a physical system across the electrical, thermal, and mechanical domains and be capable of creating appropriate computer models of these systems which incorporate the relevant features, dynamics, and application-critical behaviors. A candidate should understand the concepts of transient, steady-state, and load flow analysis, understand the appropriate applications for each, and demonstrate the ability to perform the studies and interpret the results.

The successful candidate must demonstrate an attitude for growth, continuously expanding their knowledge and skill to remain on the cutting-edge.  The candidate must be organized and detail oriented.  This role may involve interacting with customers whose needs are constantly evolving and are sometimes difficult to articulate; thus, strong communication skills will also be beneficial.

Integer is a science and technology research and development organization. As such, much of our work entails developing solutions for complex problems that presently have no known solutions. To achieve internal and customer project goals all candidates must be able to perform research, understand new concepts from other engineering disciplines on advanced and complex topics, and document findings in a way that is easy for non-experts to understand.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar technical discipline.

  • 5+ years of experience industry experience in microgrid power systems integrated power system concepts, and/or ship power systems.

  • Demonstrated mastery of at least one computer modeling & simulation environment (MATLAB/Simulink preferred).

  • Familiarity with at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Java) with a preference for Python.

  • Experience writing, simulating, and deploying control software for power systems and power system components.

  • Demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or more of the following technical areas:

    • Electrical Power and Energy Systems including electric machinery, gas turbines, diesel generators, propulsion systems, batteries, power electronics, switchgear, etc.

    • Cooling and Ventilation Systems including heat exchangers, pumps, valves, piping, expansion tanks, fans, etc.

    • Machinery Control Systems including sensing, communication, and system level controls for electric plants, machinery, and electromechanical systems.

  • U.S. citizenship. Must have the ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance that requires

  • U.S. citizenship. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A graduate degree (Masters/PhD) in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or similar technical discipline. A record of relevant industry experience, technical leadership, publications, or other recognitions for expertise may substitute for an advanced degree.

  • Deep technical knowledge of simulation solver technologies and numerical integration methods.  Awareness of industry best practices for robust numerical convergence.

  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Java).

  • Experience using software version control and working in an agile coding environment with peer collaboration and code reviews.

  • Experience writing software to automate and schedule batches of simulations.

  • Experience with objective functions and optimal control of dynamic systems.

  • Experience with machine learning applied to data driven modeling.

  • Real time simulation of power system components using RTDS, Typhoon, Speedgoat, etc.

Company Benefits

  • Integer fully covers medical, prescription, vision, and dental insurance costs for the employee and dependents. Meaning Integer standard plan pays 100% of health insurance premiums for your entire family from a well-known national insurer, saving its employee’s thousands of dollars annually.
