Maritime Robotics Systems Engineer

Our unmanned systems portfolio includes work on critical enabling technologies for more reliable, more intelligent, and longer-duration unmanned systems. We are actively developing a new perception system that automatically detects objects on and just below the surface of the water, day or night, and in most weather conditions, by fusing sensor data from multi-spectral cameras and radar using reliable and validated machine learning algorithms. This perception system will be a key enabler for autonomous ships to navigate safely without human intervention. Our power & energy systems portfolio includes work supporting the DoD’s the electrification of platforms beginning with Navy ships. Applications include hybrid and electric propulsion systems, autonomous controls, and integration with mission systems to achieve ultra-fast power system response. Our advanced manufacturing portfolio includes works to improve the throughput and quality of high-temperature composite parts used in advanced military aerospace systems. 

The Maritime Robotics Systems Engineering role requires passion and drive to understand intricate multi-domain/multiphysics systems that share information over multiple communication systems, identify important features, and create appropriate computer models of these systems which incorporate these relevant features, application-critical behaviors, and communications.  The systems engineer will work both individually and in concert with other engineers, subject-matter experts, and program management to devise suitable modeling strategies and subsequently to produce robust, reliable models for several customers across government and industry.  

The successful candidate must demonstrate an attitude for growth, continuously expanding their knowledge and skill to remain on the cutting-edge.  The candidate must be organized and detail oriented.  This role may involve interacting with customers whose needs are constantly evolving and are sometimes difficult to articulate; thus, strong communication skills will also be beneficial.   

Integer is a science and technology research and development organization. As such, much of our work entails developing solutions for complex problems that presently have no known solutions. To achieve internal and customer project goals all candidates must be able to perform research, understand new concepts from other engineering disciplines on advanced and complex topics, and document findings in a way that is easy for non-experts to understand. 

Primary Responsibilities  

• Provide virtual modeling subject matter expertise for the Company’s projects related to uncrewed vehicles and modeling and simulation, particularly in the development and application of digital twins for maritime communication systems, UUVs, and USVs.  

• Write software and manipulate data streams from the sensors of physical systems to be integrated in the overall models. 

• Apply and learn as needed multiple algorithm and software development languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, C, C++ …), libraries (e.g., NumPy, Pandas, Keras …) and frameworks (e.g., ROS …) as necessary to collaborate with the Company’s software development and modeling & simulation teams. 

• Collaborate closely with other Company scientists and engineers on multi-disciplinary teams to prototype and test new technologies in the uncrewed systems portfolio. 

• Accurately forecast time and level of effort to achieve a desired result. Support the project Principal Investigator(s) to identify goals and your role within the tasking to achieve the goals. Support the Program Manager(s) to meet project schedules and deliver on-time. 

• Contribute to monthly reports and quarterly performance reviews for the customer. Contributions to include text, presentation slides, and oral updates. 

• Contribute to the business development and hardware engineering teams to support a product development roadmap that leads to sales of products and/or licensing of intellectual property derived from the Company’s science and technology research.  

• Travel as required to execute research and product development. Travel is estimated to average less than 10%. 

• Other duties as assigned, potentially supporting the Company as needed to develop new funded research and engineering projects. 

• Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or similar technical discipline. 

• Demonstrated proficiency of at least one computer modeling & simulation environment (Python or MATLAB/Simulink preferred). 

• Experience working in one or more of the following technical areas: 

• Communication Systems including satellite systems, radio systems, acoustic systems, etc. (preferably as applied to maritime operations) 

• Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles including vehicle design, situational awareness/perception systems, autonomy, etc. 

• Uncrewed Surface Vehicles including vehicle design, situational awareness/perception systems, autonomy, etc.  

• Platform Level Digital Twins including underwater vehicles, surface vehicles, ground vehicles, aerial vehicles, etc.  

• Modeling and Simulation including physics-based modeling and/or reduced order modeling of whole systems, subsystems, and/or components.  

• U.S. citizenship. Must have the ability to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance that requires U.S. citizenship. Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information.  

• A graduate degree (Masters/PhD) in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or similar technical discipline.  

• A record of relevant industry experience, technical leadership, publications, or other recognitions for expertise may substitute for an advanced degree. 

• Deep technical knowledge of simulation solver technologies and numerical integration methods.  Awareness of industry best practices for robust numerical convergence.  

• Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Java).
