Job Description

Director of Strategy

What
We Do

Integer Technologies is an applied research and product development company founded by scientists and engineers with a passion for technology and national security. We perform R&D on next-generation systems and technologies for the Department of Defense and other U.S. Government agencies. We are hardware and software developers with experience turning research into impactful products for military and commercial applications. Our core portfolio of research includes projects in controls and automation for electrical and machinery systems, perception systems for uncrewed vehicles (with an emphasis on maritime vehicles), digital twins and autonomy, and advanced manufacturing. We are a startup founded for the purpose of putting research into action. Our mission is to create a safer world by translating scientific discoveries into reliable products that address urgent national security needs… at the speed of relevance.

Our unmanned systems portfolio includes work on critical enabling technologies for more reliable, more intelligent, and longer-duration unmanned systems. We are actively developing a new perception system that automatically detects objects on and just below the surface of the water, day, or night, and in most weather conditions, by fusing sensor data from multi-spectral cameras and radar using reliable and validated machine learning algorithms. Our power & energy systems portfolio includes work supporting the DoD’s the electrification of platforms beginning with Navy ships. Applications include hybrid and electric propulsion systems, autonomous controls, and integration with mission systems to achieve ultra-fast power system response. Our advanced manufacturing portfolio includes works to improve the throughput and quality of high-temperature composite parts used in advanced military aerospace systems. This diverse R&D portfolio requires engagement with an equally diverse group of customers from government and industry.

About the
Role

The Director of Strategy will lead the planning and execution of the business development and capture strategies for Integer’s growing suite of products and services. You will work directly with the Integer leadership team on the strategic planning and pursuit of business development opportunities.

Integer is an applied research and engineering firm that works with top research institutions across the country to transition science and technology research into prototype systems, demonstrations, and fieldable products for the Department of Defense and industry customers. As such, the Director of Strategy must have prior experience interfacing with technical and administrative leaders in the defense and maritime sectors. Integer engages with the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), including Program Executive Offices (PEOs), Program Management Offices (PMSs), and Warfare Centers, as well as other Navy and DoD offices responsible for naval programs.

An ideal candidate for the role has a deep understanding of the existing and prospective customer base, the current or planned programmatic and technical roadmaps, and is cognizant of the competitive landscape. A key aspect of this role is to build the relationships with key government stakeholders and program management, understand their current and future needs, and work with Integer leadership and engineers to scope services and product development opportunities based on those needs.

Integer’s operating model is to turn early-stage science and technology research topics into tangible technology for the Department of Defense. Much of our work entails developing solutions for complex problems that presently have no known solutions. The early-stage nature of Integer’s portfolio also means that a key aspect of the Director of Strategy role will be the development of product roadmaps for specific technologies within that portfolio. This will be used to ensure that the technical research Integer is investing in is aligned with identified business opportunities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead on Integer’s business development and capture efforts. Work directly with Integer leadership to identify and pursue business development and capture opportunities, develop Integer’s business development strategy, and maintain Integer’s business development pipeline.

  • Communicate Integer’s value to clients and customers. This role will serve as a key representative of Integer to a broad audience that includes government, industry, and academic partners. The Director of Strategy must project Integer’s values, convey insights about Integer’s technical capabilities and accomplishments, and articulate our strategy for transforming research into products and capabilities for the Department of Defense.

  • Leverage existing relationship with government and industry customers, clients, and potential teammates to develop market insights, technology or service gaps and needs within the defense sector, and new business development/capture opportunities.

  • Work with Integer’s technical team to guide and inform research and development and product development efforts based on insight from customer interactions.

  • Monitor the market to track potential emerging needs, changing market landscapes, and new funding or contract opportunities. Lead the development of new bids, proposals, white papers, or other efforts required to compete for new funding or contracts with government and industry customers. Work with technical teams and Integer leadership to develop win themes and discriminators for Integer’s portfolio, write and review bid documents, and track bid schedules to ensure timely submissions.

  • Develop research and development and product development roadmaps for key technologies within Integer’s portfolio. Leverage existing relationships and an understanding of the defense sector to ensure roadmaps are tailored to market needs.

  • Provide mentorship and guidance as needed to technical leadership staff at Integer. This may include overseeing operational functions including proposal writing workshops, product pitch development, and assisting with recruiting efforts.

Core Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DoD Top Secret Clearance.

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.

  • 5+ years of experience relevant to the job duties outlined above.

  • Demonstrated experience leading business development and capture efforts in the defense and maritime sectors.

  • Existing relationships with stakeholders and potential customers in NAVSEA, Department of Defense, and relevant industry customers.

  • An ability to speak authoritatively on technical concepts. Integer’s business model relies on conveying the value of early-stage research to potential customers, and this role requires an intellectual curiosity and the ability to learn about complex systems and technologies across multiple operational domains.

  • An understanding of the Department of Defense’s high-level strategy, mission capability gaps, and future needs.

  • Experience writing and reviewing bid packages for federal customers.

  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to travel up to approximately 40% of time.

Additional
Desired
Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or similar relevant technical field.

  • An understanding of the Navy’s mission goals, current and future capabilities, and research organization.

  • Experience working with, and relationships within, the surface combatant and uncrewed maritime systems program offices within NAVSEA.

  • Experience developing roadmaps for earlier stage technologies, and developing business development opportunities to both mature and sell services and products related to those technologies.
